Educate

It is fundamental for our future to inspire and educate our next generation towards a more sustainable island. A selection of schools will receive three different lessons (for students in classes 7 and 8) on various water-oriented interactive topics, with the fourth lesson being the AWA event held at the nearest beach.

School program

The goal of the educational program:

  • To educate children on the importance of preserving and protecting ocean ecosystems

  • To increase awareness of the impact of plastic waste on marine life

  • To promote the importance of mangroves in protecting coastlines and supporting marine ecosystems

  • To encourage responsible use of the islands resources like fishing, tourism and maritime industry

Local Schools

Local schools will be able to participate and receive 3 class lessons over the period of one month. Lessons will be available in Dutch, Papiamentu and English, but will be primarily focused on Papiamentu and local kids

The capacity of the AWA watersport event will be a maximum of 32 kids per Timeslot of 2 hours, this is the average class size of local schools which is perfect for a class trip for classes 7 & 8 this will allow 3-4 timeslots per day.

The goal is to inspire and educate 800 kids over the period of the month April 2024.

Four Lesson Program

The first lesson will focus on ocean conservation and the impact of plastic waste on the ocean's health. Students will learn about sustainability (refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle) and participate in a beach cleanup to see the impact of plastic waste firsthand.

The second lesson will focus on the importance of mangroves as critical habitats for marine life, including fish, birds, and other animals. Students will learn about the benefits of mangroves, how they support biodiversity and protect coastlines from storms, and participate in a guided tour of local mangrove ecosystems.

The third lesson will focus on Coral reef and marine life. Students will learn about the different types of marine ecosystems and the diversity of species that inhabit them. Learning how to identify fish and other marine life and observe them in their natural habitats.

The final lesson will take place at the AWA event, where students will have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice by participating in watersports and beach activities. They will also have the chance to share what they have learned with others and engage in fun and educational activities to further reinforce the importance of ocean conservation and sustainability.
